Thailand is set to ban hazardous herbicides before the end of 2019, said deputy agriculture minister Manunya Thaiseth as the herbicides are strongly opposed by consumer and environmentalists

As reported in The Thaiger, she ordered a suspension of granting permits for paraquat, chlorpyrifos and glyphosate.

“The safety of human beings cannot be compromised. While we are living with hazardous chemicals and are taking preventive measures, the chemicals have spread into the environment,” she added.

Thailand’s Ministry of Health has joined the country’s civic and consumer groups in calling for a complete ban of the three chemicals, claiming that several countries have already banned them, said the source.

Paraquat has already been banned in 53 countries due to concerns over its health impacts. The other two have seen a restriction in use in several countries.
