Two vaccines against African Swine fever (ASF), have recently been approved by Vietnam for domestic use in the country

A report by Reuters mentioned that more than 650,000 doses of the two vaccines, NAVET-ASFVAC and AVAC ASF LIVE, had been tested on hog herds in 40 provinces, yielding a 95% efficacy rate. The Vietnamese government has approved the domestic commercial use of these vaccines, urging companies to work out plans to produce these for domestic sale and export.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), ASF has become a major crisis for the pork industry in recent years, with outbreaks being responsible for massive losses in pig populations and drastic economic consequences. Moreover, the ASF virus is also highly resistant and contagious with a 100% mortality rate.

The approval of these vaccines is therefore seen as a major breakthrough to combat this deadly disease.
