Chinese researchers have created a record for hybrid rice production with an average yield of 66.7 kg per ha
The team was led by Yuan Longping, known in China as ‘father of hybrid rice’ and the new record confirmed by the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center and the agricultural bureau of the Xiangxi Prefecture, who harvested three lots of seven ha growing the new hybrid rice known as ‘Y liangyou 900’ last week.
The farm is located at Zhongnan village in Longshan County of central China’s Hunan Province.
Yuan Longping, 84, had developed the world’s first hybrid rice in 1974.
The new progress surpassed the 66 kg per ha target set by the Chinese Agriculture Ministry in 2013 after the yield of hybrid rice was raised to 64.2 kg per ha in 2012.
