Philippines’ corn production is expected to reach a record 8.2mn metric tonnes this year, with at least 150,000 metric tonnes in surplus

The department of agriculture said that the Q3 2013 production is expected at 2.6mn metric tonnes, up from 2.4mn tonnes in the same period last year.

Edilberto de Luna, agriculture assistant secretary, said, “This year is expected to reach 8.2mn metric tonnes, up 10 per cent from 7.4mn metric tonnes in 2012.”

He added that in the first half of 2013 corn harvests reached 4.4mn metric tonnes.

“This is because of quality seeds and extension activities — which include training and delivery of technology, investments in mechanisation and improvement of harvest facilities to stem losses,” de Luna said.
