Vietnams shrimp industry is set to receive a significant boost in international market value thanks to the innovative Grofarm model introduced by Grobest
This approach was unveiled at the 2023 Shrimp Summit held in Ho Chi Minh City last month, garnering widespread acclaim for its potential to revolutionise high-tech shrimp farming under increasingly challenging circumstances.
The Grofarm model, boasting an impressive success rate of more than 80%, emerged as a comprehensive solution to the complex issues plaguing Asian and global shrimp industries. The ongoing concerns span from stagnant production to the need for sustainable livelihoods among growers. Environmental challenges have destabilised Vietnam's shrimp farming market, coupled with domestic price fluctuations that have hindered export and processing activities, endangering the industry's competitive edge.
The 2023 Shrimp Summit, organised by the Center for Responsible Seafood (TCRS), seized the spotlight as a pivotal industry event. Recognising Vietnam's vital seafood economy and strategic position in Asia, the summit unfolded over two days, gathering hundreds of experts and business leaders spanning the entire shrimp value chain. Its central objective was to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and dynamic discussions, all focused on promoting sustainability and adapting to climate change.
At the heart of this event was Grobest's Grofarm model, which emerged as a prominent solution. This open platform unites key industry stakeholders, ranging from farmers to hatcheries and equipment suppliers. Attendees were granted firsthand insight into the model through a visit to Minh Phu’s Intensive Tank Farm, a significant partner farm of Grobest Vietnam.
Grobest's Grofarm model comprises five pivotal elements, each tailored to ensure optimal results and heightened productivity. Firstly, expert consultation services guide farmers in designing and operating efficient farming systems. Secondly, meticulous selection of top-quality post-larvae sources adapts to regional seasonal variations and unique farm needs.
A noteworthy third element centres around an optimised feeding programme that emphasises daily and functional feeds, enhancing shrimp nutrition for boosted immunity and growth. Fourthly, the Mobile Lab service enables on-site assessment of shrimp health and water quality to swiftly address emerging issues. Finally, the model keenly focuses on reducing production costs per kilo of shrimp and maximising overall crop profitability.
This holistic approach yields a sustainable supply of clean shrimp with exceptional quality, maintaining reasonable prices while minimising environmental impact. Since its introduction in 2021, the Grofarm model has demonstrated impressive economic efficiencies and remarkable profits across more than 600 shrimp farms. With a success rate reaching 82.9% after three years of trial, the model has proven its potential to revolutionise the industry.
The commercial shrimp produced through the Grofarm model has garnered commendation from purchasing units, distributors, and export entities, both domestically and abroad. During the 2023 Shrimp Summit, Dr. Le Van Khoa, head of Technical Service at Grobest Vietnam, highlighted the model's profound value.
